How did you get into music ? Did you learn how to play the piano, how to compose... ?
when i was 5 years old, i started to learn classic piano. for about 10 years i had been learning.
after i entered a college, i began to compose with synth and sampler.
Is Re.Sort your first album or have you made some demo albums or auto productions ?
yes, "re.sort" is my first album. i’ve not any demo albums before.
There are many elements in you songs : little noises, water sounds, voices...
How do you work on arrangements & production ? What was your idea as you released Re.Sort ?
my idea is "combination". i’m interested in how to put together various elements... for example, sounds
(noise, voices, jazz samples, acoustic instruments), music genres and methods (music concrete, soundscape, minimalism, cut-up...).
More generally how did you work on this album ? Where did you compose it ?
What was you aim releasing it ? Is there a story inside Re.Sort ? In
what state of mind were you in as you compose it ? Is Re.sort very linked
to your own personal story ?
first, i collect various sounds.
second, i put them together to make one phrase. if the phrase is well, i add sounds again.
i feel that i do editing audio files rather than compose. in my way, "vegas" that is a software i use is very important.
it is a software for video editing, but also very useful for audio editing like cut-up collage.
in this software, i always try to combinate various sounds. the result of these trials is this album.
my production is like puzzle.
i composed this album in my room.... where is far from resort... haha.
well, the aim was not so clear... as i said, it would be "combination" i
guess.
there is no story in this album.
i didn’t remeber my state of mind exactly.
it would be not so calm, i guess.
i didn’t intend to reflect my personal story.
but it is natural that this album was an expression of my desire.
What appeals me first listening to Re.sort is that this album is very graceful
and characterised by its fluidity... There are many elements included but it
always sounds aerial & natural... What do you think of this opinion ? Is this
fluidity something important for you ?
yes, definitely i always keep that fuidity in my mind when i compose.
On Revans you use a jazz sample. On Satellite Towers there’s a
double bass sample that seems to come from jazz too. Is that genre an
influence in your music ? What artists influenced you the most ? As you listen
to Re.Sort now, are there some moments you better understand (than when composing them) ?
i like to listen jazz.
or rather, the texture of sound of jazz and bossa and old records i like.
the most influenced artist is pierre henry who is the mad scientist of music
concrete.
no.
The titles of Re.Sort songs titles are in French, Spanish, English, but not in Japanese. Why ?
there are no special meaning.
Do you regret anything on Re.Sort ?
yes. i’ll improve next time.
Re.Sort is a compilation of songs composed between 2001-2003. Does it mean that the songs
have not been composed to make an album at the end ? Before Re.Sort you released some songs
on different compilations. How do you sign with Plop ?
yes, this album contains all songs which were finished at that time.
of course, there were more unfinished songs.
i liked "gel : -1" that was released from plop in japan.
my music is influenced somewhat by gel, so i sent a demo to plop.
nao liked my demo and decided that plop releases my album.
Are you working on some new material ? Do you think that your musical orientation will change ?
in fact, lately i’ve been busy with school and work, so i can’t make any songs.
yes, it’ll change.
Do you have an aim, composing as Sora ?
in future, as sora, i’ll make pleasant and comfortable sound.
